OpenChoreo is an open-source internal developer platform built on Kubernetes, originally developed by WSO2 from its Choreo SaaS product and now a CNCF Sandbox project under the Apache 2.0 licence. It exists to close the painful gap between the power of Kubernetes and the productivity of the people who ship software on top of it. Instead of asking every developer to wrangle Deployments, Services, NetworkPolicies, Ingresses, and CI pipelines by hand, OpenChoreo offers a small set of higher-level abstractions — Project, Component, Workload, Environment, and a deployment pipeline that promotes releases between them — and compiles that intent into the underlying cluster machinery automatically. This book starts with the problem OpenChoreo solves and the philosophy behind it, then works through its multi-plane architecture, the developer abstractions you model your applications with, the platform APIs that engineers govern with, the cell-based runtime that isolates workloads with Cilium and eBPF, the build and GitOps workflows that move code into clusters, the observability plane that watches it all, and finally how teams adopt OpenChoreo and where it fits among Backstage, Argo, and the wider platform-engineering landscape.
