Krkn — pronounced "kraken" — is a CNCF sandbox chaos and resiliency testing tool that deliberately injects failures into Kubernetes and OpenShift clusters so teams can discover how their systems behave under stress before a real outage forces the lesson. This book follows Krkn from first principles to production practice. It opens with the uncomfortable assumptions distributed systems are built on and why chaos engineering exists to challenge them, then walks through the scientific method Krkn embodies: establish a steady state, form a hypothesis, inject failure, and observe. From there it dissects Krkn's architecture — the out-of-cluster engine, its plugin-driven scenarios, and the krkn-lib foundation — before touring the full scenario catalog, from pod and node kills to zone outages, network chaos, resource hogs, and time skew. Later chapters cover Cerberus health signalling, Prometheus and Elasticsearch telemetry with SLO validation, the containerized krkn-hub and the krknctl orchestration CLI, and finally how to fold all of it into CI/CD pipelines and a disciplined resilience practice.
