SlimFaas: Lightweight Functions on Kubernetes

SlimFaas is a lightweight Function-as-a-Service platform that takes a deliberately minimal approach: instead of brokers, custom controllers, and special function packaging, it sits in front of the deployments you already run and gives them serverless behaviour through a handful of pod annotations. A function is just an ordinary deployment that SlimFaas can scale to zero, wake on demand, route to, and invoke synchronously or through a durable asynchronous queue. This book works from the problem and philosophy through the HTTP proxy and request flow, the annotations that define functions, the two-phase PromQL-driven scaling engine, async invocation with retries and jobs, the Raft-backed SlimData store and internal workers, and finally how to deploy, observe, and place SlimFaas in the cloud-native landscape.
