K8up: Declarative Backups for Kubernetes
by Shriira Press
K8up — pronounced "ketchup" — is a CNCF Sandbox operator that brings backup and restore into the Kubernetes API itself. Instead of cron jobs and bespoke scripts, you write a Schedule, point it at object storage, and the operator finds your volumes, runs Restic against them, prunes old snapshots, verifies repository integrity, and exports metrics. This book starts with the problem of protecting stateful workloads and the Restic engine K8up wraps, then builds through the operator's architecture, the Backup, Restore, Archive, Check, and Prune resources, smart randomized Schedules, application-aware backups with PreBackupPods and the backupcommand annotation, retention and pruning, and restore strategies. It closes with a practical guide to running K8up reliably in production.
